This is particularly complex in supply diffusers, which distribute air rather than just extract it.
In modern buildings, it is essential to ensure high-quality air supply and extraction. Users don’t want to feel strong gusts or air currents, yet modern construction standards require the circulation of large air volumes. Standard diffusers blow air in concentrated streams, forming a cone-shaped jet similar to a spotlight. In contrast, diffusers with the Coanda effect allow large volumes of air to be distributed evenly without a noticeable flow.
What is the Coanda effect?
It is a phenomenon where an air or liquid stream “clings” to a convex surface and flows along its contours. In air diffusers, this effect allows the airflow to move parallel to the ceiling rather than downward in directed streams. As a result, even when standing directly beneath the diffuser, you won’t feel a direct air blast – ensuring maximum comfort.
Creating a diffuser with the Coanda effect and clearly defined 90° edges was a challenging task, as it contradicts the basic physics of airflow. However, Ventmann solved this by offering a frameless design and a gypsum product that can be plastered and painted – preserving both aesthetics and functionality.
Circle COANDA diffusers are not recommended for use/installation as exhaust units.
